Our guest Jack Zipes argues that folktales and fairytales are not designed purely for the amusement of children but contain serious social and political implications. Dr. Zipes, a retired Professor from the University of Minnesota is known for his lectures on German literature, critical theory, German Jewish culture, children’s literature, and folklore. He has written 20+ works on fairy tales. He talks to us about how fairytales hold underlying significance such as the myriad versions of Red Riding-hood and Hansel and Gretel and what these stories really signify. We explore the power and effect of fairy tales on societal landscape, including the word witch in relation to women and their empowerment.

Watch this episode on YouTube

Click below to watch this full episode on our YouTube channel.

Are fairytales only for children?
